Your First Visit at Willis Kids Pediatric Dentistry

A Calm, Kid-Friendly First Appointment

We know that life in Willis and the surrounding rural communities can be busy. Whether you’re driving in from out of town, managing school schedules, or bringing multiple kids at once, we’ve designed your child’s first dental visit to be easy, welcoming, and worth the trip. Our goal? Help your child feel safe and proud—and send you home with answers, confidence, and a clear plan.

The “Dental Home” Goal

We want to become your child’s trusted dental home. A dental home is a go-to place for preventive care, regular checkups, and expert guidance—not just when there’s a problem. American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatrics recommend establishing a dental home by your child’s first birthday (or when their first tooth appears).

Before You Arrive

Pick the Best Time for Your Child

If possible, choose an appointment time when your child is well-rested and alert. Many kids do best earlier in the day. Keep the conversation positive and light—a calm mindset starts at home.

Try "Tell–Show–Do" at Home

Use this trusted pediatric method: tell your child what to expect, show them with a simple book or pretend play, then do the visit together.

Avoid Scary Words

Skip words like “shot,” “drill,” or “hurt.” Using calm, factual language keeps anxiety low.

What to Bring

  • Parent or guardian photo ID
  • Dental insurance card (if applicable)
  • Details on your child's medical history, medications, or allergies
  • A comfort item like a small toy or stuffed animal
  • Your questions and concerns—we’re here to listen

What to Expect During the First Visit

We meet each child at their own pace and explain everything in age-appropriate language. Think of this first visit as a balance between building comfort and doing a gentle, thorough assessment.

A typical first visit may include:

    • A gentle dental exam (teeth, gums, bite, and jaw growth)
    • A professional cleaning
    • Digital X-rays, if needed
    • A cavity risk screening and custom prevention plan
    • A clear, friendly explanation of our findings and next steps

If your child is very young or anxious, we may start with a relaxed, educational “happy visit” to help them get comfortable. We use pediatric behavior strategies like Tell–Show–Do, positive reinforcement, and desensitization techniques to build trust and confidence.

Can I Stay with My Child?

Absolutely. We encourage parents to stay with their child during visits. Your presence helps provide comfort—and kids often take emotional cues from you.

If Your Child Is Anxious or Has Special Healthcare Needs

You’re not alone. Many children feel nervous, and pediatric dental care is built to support them. We personalize care using comfort-first strategies and extra support when needed.

Let us know ahead of time if your child has:

    • Sensory sensitivities
    • Previous difficult dental visits
    • Medical or developmental conditions
    • A strong gag reflex or high anxiety

We’ll plan a visit tailored to help your child feel calm and successful.
